Windows[German]As of April 11, 2023, Microsoft has released a slew of security updates for the still-supported versions of Windows, some of which address critical vulnerabilities. Administrators and users running Trend Micro Endpoint on Windows need to be wary of the April 2023 updates. Edge 112.0.1722.54

EdgeMicrosoft updated the Edge browser to version 112.0.1722.54 (security and bug fixes) on April 19, 2023 in the Stable Channel. Readers have alerted me to the browser's new update. According to the release notes, the Chrome vulnerability CVE-2023-2136 is closed.

Windows 11: Defender update KB5007651 brings FASR, fixes LAS bug, but still causes issues

Windows[German]Microsoft has released Defender Update KB5007651 for its anti-malware platform, version 1.0.2303.27001 for Windows 11, effective April 18, 2023. The update is intended to fix a Local Security Authority (LSA) bug in Windows 11 and brings "hardware-assisted protection" in the form of FASR (Firmware Attack Surface Reduction). A German blog reader contacted me about this and reports that the Defender Memory Access Protection option is no longer changeable. In addition, there is still a message that "Security Health Service exe" is crashing. As it turns out, the new FASR feature under Windows 11 is only available on newer CPUs (from Intel 11 Gen. and AMD counterparts).

Actually, the support for CARs should expire – but Microsoft announced a few days ago an extension of the support until September 2024. The companies concerned or their administrators will therefore receive an extended transition period.

Does Microsoft Office 365 install itself automatically over Office 2016/2019?

[German]Users of Microsoft Office 2016 or 2019 may be facing a very messy problem. A reader pointed out to me that on two of his systems, the Office 2019 installation had suddenly been replaced by Office 365. Doing a quick search, I found more cases. Microsoft seems to have set all the switches towards Office 365 subscription and there are numerous pitfalls where upgrading to Office 365 is imminent.

Special Defender update for Windows installation media (April 2023)

Windows[German]Microsoft has recently released a specially customized version of Defender for Windows installation media. The package is available in Windows Imaging Format (WIM) and Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) and includes new definitions that support Windows 11, all editions of Windows 10, Windows Server 2016 and 2019. This update package is required because a Windows installation image may contain outdated anti-malware definitions and software binaries.

Microsoft is upgrading parts of Office 2016/2019 to Office 365 …

[German]Quick note/question for readers who use Microsoft Office with a perpetual license. I got reports, that an April 2023 update has changed in the name for the Office update page, saying now, that the app is receiving Office 365  updates. It's a renaming, and not switching to Office 365. But it confuses users.

Mozilla[German]The Mozilla developers had released version 112.0 of Firefox with some new features on April 11, 2023. On April 17, 2023, the maintenance update to version 112.0.1 had to be released, which is supposed to fix bugs.
