Windows 11: Defender update KB5007651 brings FASR, fixes LAS bug, but still causes issues

Windows[German]Microsoft has released Defender Update KB5007651 for its anti-malware platform, version 1.0.2303.27001 for Windows 11, effective April 18, 2023. The update is intended to fix a Local Security Authority (LSA) bug in Windows 11 and brings "hardware-assisted protection" in the form of FASR (Firmware Attack Surface Reduction). A German blog reader contacted me about this and reports that the Defender Memory Access Protection option is no longer changeable. In addition, there is still a message that "Security Health Service exe" is crashing. As it turns out, the new FASR feature under Windows 11 is only available on newer CPUs (from Intel 11 Gen. and AMD counterparts).

Chrome[German]Google has released updates to the Google Chrome browser 112 in the stable channel for Mac and Windows on April 18, 2023. These are security updates that fix critical vulnerabilities. The apps for Android has also been updated.

Exchange Online: Client Access Rules (CARs) supported until Sept. 2024

Exchange Logo[German]A short note for administrators who are responsible for Exchange Online in companies and have used Client Access Rules (CARs) so far. Actually, the support for CARs should expire – but Microsoft announced a few days ago an extension of the support until September 2024. The companies concerned or their administrators will therefore receive an extended transition period.

I had reported on problems this move by Microsoft brings to non-English Windows systems. I just came across a blog post that outlines the steps to update a Windows Server Active Directory schema for the current Windows LAPS version.

Special Defender update for Windows installation media (April 2023)

Windows[German]Microsoft has recently released a specially customized version of Defender for Windows installation media. The package is available in Windows Imaging Format (WIM) and Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) and includes new definitions that support Windows 11, all editions of Windows 10, Windows Server 2016 and 2019. This update package is required because a Windows installation image may contain outdated anti-malware definitions and software binaries.

[German]Quick note/question for readers who use Microsoft Office with a perpetual license. I got reports, that an April 2023 update has changed in the name for the Office update page, saying now, that the app is receiving Office 365  updates. It's a renaming, and not switching to Office 365. But it confuses users.

QueueJumper: Patch critical RCE vulnerability in MSMQ service

Windows[German]A remote code execution vulnerability CVE-2023-21554 exists in the Microsoft Message Queuing service (MSMQ), which has been rated critical with a CVEv3 score of 9.8. Microsoft has released security updates for Windows clients and servers on April 11, 2023, that also address this vulnerability. Those who have not yet updated their systems should apply the patch promptly, or at least mitigate the vulnerability.

Microsoft 365: Email and calendar issues in Outlook 2303 (Build 16227.20212) confirmed
