Update[German]WSUS administrators are facing issues when it comes to importing updates. For historical reasons, Internet Explorer is normally required for this import. However, Microsoft is relying on the Edge browser in Windows 10 and Windows 11. Now, instead of laboriously setting up Internet Explorer to import an update package, or tampering with PowerShell you can do this import using Microsoft Edge with IE mode as the browser. Microsoft 365: Service has been down (2021/11/02)

On Nov. 2, 2021, Microsoft experienced a disruption in Microsoft 365 services that blocked users from accessing OneDrive and SharePoint files. This prevented users from opening Excel files stored on OneDrive or SharePoint. Meanwhile, Microsoft states that the issue has been fixed again.

Microsoft Security Update Releases – October 2021

VMware ESXI 7.0: Windows Server 2012 R2 shows "non-accessible boot device" (Oct. 2021)

Windows[German]It's an issue that seems to have blown up in some administrators' faces in mid-October 2021. VMware ESXI 7.0 administrators were getting a "non-accessible boot device" error message on virtualized Windows Server 2012 R2 machines. Then the server would no longer boot. The cause was a patch from Microsoft for the paravirtualized SCSI adapters.

Windows 11 also floods folders with empty TMP directory garbage

Windows[German]Microsoft promised, with Windows 11 everything will be better, more beautiful and faster – at least if you believe Microsoft's marketing. The only thing that is a bit stupid is that the developers in Redmond are using old Windows 10 code with a few optical changes. So they are really building old Windows 10 bugs into this new great Windows 11. A German blog reader pointed out to me that Windows 11 also floods folders with empty TMP directory garbage (a bug still existing since months in Windows 10).

Surface Pro 3 and the (Card Blanche) TPM vulnerability

Recently, Microsoft had to admit a TPM vulnerability (Card Blanche) for its Surface Pro 3 and sent a corresponding security notification around. In addition, a vulnerability in the TPM chip of the Surface Pro 3 has been known for a year, for which an update is available. I'll summarize some information there.

Sysinternals Disk2vhd v2.02 released

Windows[German]A brief information for readers who occasionally need to transfer a Windows installation to a virtual machine. Microsoft has released the disk2vhd v2.02 tool in the free Sysinternals suite in October 2021. The tool lets you have a Windows installation transferred to a .vhd disk that can then be run with Virtual PC or Hyper-V.

Windows WPBT vulnerability allows Rootkit installation

Windows[German]I would like to once again flush up a security issue that affects users of Windows systems. In September, it became known that a vulnerability in WPBT allows attackers to install a rootkit on Windows machines. There is virtually nothing users can do about it and they have to hope for Microsoft's security features like WDAC.
