Update[German]As of January 11, 2022, Microsoft has released a number of security updates for Windows and Office that are supposed to eliminate vulnerabilities. However, some of these updates caused problems, disrupting functions in Windows. On January 14, 2022, Microsoft released a list of update revisions that I would like to briefly review in the wake of the January 2022 Patchday.

REvil ransomware Group took down in Russia by FSB

Sicherheit (Pexels, allgemeine Nutzung)[German]The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) has reportedly raided homes and arrested suspected members of the REvil ransomware group at the request of U.S. law enforcement. In the process, 500,000 euros and 600,000 US dollars in cash were seized. The whole thing must have happened yesterday, Friday, January 14, 2022 in various Russian cities.

Firefox 96.0.1 released

Mozilla[German]On January 14, 2022, Mozilla developers released version 96.0.1 as a maintenance update of the Firefox browser to correct a bug. According to the release notes, there is a bug fix: Addresses proxy rule exceptions not working on Windows systems when "Use system proxy settings" is set. There are also improvements to make content length header parsing more robust. The new Firefox can be updated in the browser or downloaded from this website for various platforms (the variant is to be selected via the displayed list boxes).

Microsoft patch day issues Jan. 2022: bugs confirmed, but updates not pulled

Windows[German]The January patch day 2022 (January 11, 2022) brought administrators of Windows Server systems into serious trouble: Hyper-V is bricked, DCs are force into boot loops, ReFS has been removed, IPSec VPN connections are broken, and so on. Microsoft has confirmed some of these issues and is probably also in the process of withdrawing the updates (it has been pulled on Windows Update on Jan. 13th, but are now offered again). Below I try to summarize the current state.

Ubuntu 21.04: Support ends January 20, 2022

Small hint for people who are still using Ubuntu 21.04. This was released on April 22, 2021, as you can read here. According to this page, support expires in January 2022 – 9too4linux.com has it a bit more precise in this article: the support end date is January 20, 2022. And Ubuntu 21.10 is also only supported until July 2022. Only Ubuntu 22.04 is supported until April 2027.

Firefox 96.0 und 91.5.0 esr; Issues with web site access – but it's fixed now

Mozilla[German]Mozilla developers have released version 96.0.0 with some new features and 95.5.0esr of the Firefox browser on January 11, 2022. However, with the new Firefox 96 there was problems accessing various websites. Here is the information on how to fix the access issues, caused by a (now fixed) telemetry http3 bug.

Patchday: Microsoft Office Updates (January 11, 2022)

Update[German]On January 11, 2022 (second Tuesday of the month, Microsoft Patchday), Microsoft released several security-related updates for still-supported Microsoft Office versions and other products.
