Windows 11: Fix for Explorer crash when opening Win+X menu in build 22563

Windows[German]Windows 11 users complain about Windows Explorer crashes as soon as the Win+X context menu is opened via right-click. The whole thing probably refers to the Insider Preview Windows 11 build 22563.1, but Explorer crashes have been part of users' everyday life since the release of Windows 11. However, there is a workaround that can prevent these crashes with the help of a third-party tool.

Crash in Windows 11 Build 22563

Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22563 was released to Windows Insiders in the Developer Channel on February 24, 2022. The announcement was made on the Windows blog. There, the tablet-optimized taskbar is also mentioned as a new feature, as well as fixed Explorer crashes. However, a known problem can be found in the Known Issues:

If you right click on the Start icon in this build or press WIN + X, explorer.exe will likely crash. Please use CTRL + Shift + Esc for the time being if you use this menu to launch Task Manager.

This means that Explorer crashes when you try to open the Win+X menu by right-clicking Start or using the Windows+X key combination. There have also been several messages on reddit.com since yesterday, such as this report from a user who complains about these Explorer crashes when opening the Win+X menu under Windows 11 22563.1. The user has the error on three different Windows 11 devices.

Win + X crashes explorer.exe on Windows 11 22563.1

Tested with three devices with different hardware configurations and they all have this problem. Am i alone on this?

Das ist also ein Bug, der wohl alle Windows 11 Insider, die die neue Build installiert haben, betrifft. So this is a bug that probably affects all Windows 11 Insiders who have installed the new build.

A workaround via ViveTool

From developer Albacore, there is a small tool called ViVe (referred to as ViVeTool) that can be used to enable and disable hidden Windows 10 features. The colleagues from Deskmodder have already described the tool in this German article in April 2020. Now this ViveTool seems to offer the possibility to avoid the crash of the Explorer when opening the Win+X menu on Windows 11 22563.1.

I have come across relevant hints at Techdows as well as at the colleagues of German site Deskmodder. Here are the steps to fix the issue.

  1. Download the Vivetool from Github
  2. Extract the files into the folder Windows/system 32
  3. Open an administrative command prompt and enter the following command:

vivetool addconfig 26008830 2

Afterwards the explorer has to be restarted via the task manager. Then the crashes should no longer occur. The colleagues from Deskmodder have a slightly modified guide and describe one more side effect of this approach.

Drives me nuts not having WinX.

It works on 567 but you have to restart. Works for me

    • Omid says:

Yeah, no go here. When I apply it and restart. I get a crash (green screen now) on the first restart and then once it is rebooted, still the same issue.
