[German]Microsoft once again had to admit to a problem that affects both Windows 10 from version 2004 and Windows 11. After installing an update, the MSI installer may cause trouble, as both repairing and updating applications (apps) no longer works. Here is a brief overview of this problem. Addendum: A fix is getting tested with Insiders.
November 2021 updates cause trouble
In the Windows 10 Healt Status dashboard, for version 2004 or newer, there is an entry Microsoft Installer might have issues updating or repairing apps, which describes the issue. After installing KB5007186 or newer updates, Microsoft Installer (MSI) may have issues repairing or updating apps. The affected apps include some applications from Kaspersky. Affected apps may not open after an update or repair is attempted.
For Windows 11, update KB5007215 dated November 9, 2021 or newer is cited as causing the same issue. The following Windows variants are affected by this bug:
- Client: Windows 11, version 21H2; Windows 10, version 21H2; Windows 10, version 21H1; Windows 10, version 20H2; Windows 10, version 2004; Windows 10, version 1909; Windows 10, version 1809; Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019; Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2016; Windows 10, version 1607; Windows 10 Enterprise 2015 LTSB; Windows 8.1; Windows 7 SP1.
- Server: Windows Server 2022; Windows Server, version 20H2; Windows Server, version 2004; Windows Server, version 1909; Windows Server, version 1809; Windows Server 2019; Windows Server 2016; Windows Server 2012 R2; Windows Server 2012; Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1; Windows Server 2008 SP2.
If the problem occurs, a workaround is to completely uninstall the affected application. Afterwards, the latest version of the application has to be reinstalled. Microsoft is working on a solution and wants to eliminate the error in one of the upcoming updates.
Addendum: Microsoft has developed a fix, which is getting shipped with update KB5007262 to Windows 11 Insider.
